Taping the Blade

 Taping the Butt End

 Taping the Goalie Stick

 Taping the Shin Pad

There are three main reasons to tape the butt end of your hockey stick. The first is to create a sound grip for your top hand. Second, the tape will preserve the life of your smelly gloves. Finally, taping the butt end makes it easier to pick up your stick when it falls to the ice.

It may take a few tries before you find a method that FEELS exactly right. Once you have found it memorize it.

Remember... Grip it and Rip it!

Coach Chic recommends the following method:

First wrap the very top of the butt end with cloth tape. Many wraps if you want a large knob and less if you want a smaller knob.   Next, twist about a foot of tape, making sure that the sticky side is on the outside. Then, wrap it around the stick, spiral fashion, starting at the knob and going down.

After the twisted tape has been applied, wrap tape over it. It may be necessary to add another layer of tape. Push down to establish a firm bond.

Coach Chic suggests you try covering the handle area with friction tape. (Coach likes friction tape)

Shawn Killian has another technique worth trying:

Spiral one thin layer of tape from the top of your stick down about 6-8 inches. Tear it off. This thin cover will eliminate the tendency of your leather glove to slip down the shaft of your stick.

Split (tear) the tape lengthwise. Leave one strand loose & reattach the other strand to the roll.

To create your knob, attach the loose strand to the very top of the stick and wrap around 5-6 times. Tear off. Continue building your knob by wrapping the 2nd thin strand (still left on the roll) over the small ridge you just completed. This thinner "ridge shape" is the knob of choice for PLANET HOCKEY and many college & professional players.

Very Important: Your new knob should rest in the MIDDLE of your palm, NOT above your hand. This handle & grip combination allows for improved puck feel & control. Remember, most of the time, the top hand (the one attached to our new handle) grips the stick comfortably for control, range of motion & flexibility. It is your bottom hand (the POWER hand) that grips the stick firmly.
